DISCLAIMER - Read carefully before using Titillium!

In this course students make their first experience with type design. Every year a new group of students works 30-40 hours on Titillium during 3-4 months, after a brief introduction to type design and some hours of handmade exercises. This is just the 3rd year we are working on Titillium (the project started in 2008, 8-10 students per year). The project started from an exercise of a student (a square-sans "dotted" typeface). We chose to work on this specific "square sans" because it was, in our opinion, the easiest starting point for neophyte among all the other options presented by students. This explains the lack of kernings, the simplistic naming and the other inconsistencies. We decided to release Titillium under Sil license because:

• We´d like to give to the students (not just to ours) the possibility to use and modify a font instead of using illegally commercial fonts (under this point of view probably it make sense even to work on a sort of "paradigmatic" square shape);
• In order to make an experiment of collective design process, defining just simple basic rules (maybe too much strong?). This is the main task of the course, even more important than speaking about typography (usually our students doesn’t aim at being typographers);
• We´d like that everybody who wants could use, modify, republish his version of the font;
• In order to let to everybody the possibility to modify it for professional purposes.

In our opinion it makes sense to share what we are doing, when it is possible. Users will help us to fix problems or will discuss with us about the sense of what we are doing. We never could have imagined that Titillium would have had such diffusion. Maybe this typeface has some qualities even if it is a permanent work-in-progress, but we never claimed that this is a professional font or a particularly original one. So, before using it for professional purposes:

• Check if the glyphlist, the spacing, the naming and the design in general match your needing;
• If they doesn´t, you are free to fix the problems yourself or to write us titillium@campivisivi.net;

Keep in mind that course starts in the end of october and finishes in the end of february, and we prefer to ask students to solve problems, so we may not answer quickly to your needings! If you think that Titillium is not well designed, you may improve it and republish. Remember that you are not allowed to do so with a retail font.

In questo corso gli studenti fanno la loro prima esperienza con il type design. Ogni anno un nuovo gruppo di studenti lavora 30-40 ore al Titillium nell´arco di 3-4 mesi, dopo una breve introduzione al type design ed alcune ore di esercitazioni manuali. Questo é solo il 3° anno che gli studenti lavorano al Titillium (l progetto è iniziato nel 2008, 8-10 allievi all´anno). Il progetto è partito dall´esercizio di uno studente (una square-sans "dotted" font). Abbiamo poi scelto di lavorare su questo specifico "square sans" perché era, a nostro avviso, il punto di partenza piú semplice tra tutte le altre opzioni presentate dagli studenti. Questo spiega la mancanza di kernings e di altre incoerenze.
Abbiamo deciso di rilasciare il Titillium sotto la licenza SIL perché:

• Ci piacerebbe dare agli studenti (non solo ai nostri) la possibilità di utilizzare e modificare un carattere invece di utilizzare illegalmente le font commerciali;
• Per fare un esperimento del processo di progettazione collettiva. Questo é il compito principale del corso, ancora piú importante della tipografia (di solito ai nostri studenti non si propone di diventare tipografi);
• Ci piacerebbe che tutti coloro che lo desiderano possono utilizzare, modificare, ripubblicare la propria versione al fine di permettere a tutti la possibilità di modificarli per scopi professionali.
• Per permettere a tutti la possibilità di modificarlo per scopi professionali;

A nostro avviso avrebbe senso condividere quello che stiamo facendo, quando esso sia possibile. Gli utenti ci aiuterebbero a risolvere problemi o discutere con noi sul senso di ciò che stiamo facendo. Non avremmo mai potuto immaginare che il Titillium avrebbe avuto una tale diffusione e un tale successo. Forse questo tipo di carattere ha molte qualità, anche se si tratta di un lavoro "work in progress", ma non abbiamo mai affermato che questo è un tipo di carattere professionale o particolarmente originale. Quindi, prima di iniziare ad usarlo per scopi professionali:

• Verificare se la glyphlist, la spaziatura, il naming e il design in generale, è paragonabile a quello desiderato
• Se non lo è, siete liberi di risolvere le problematiche oppure potete scriverci a titillium@campivisivi.net.

Ricordate che il corso inizia alla fine di ottobre e termina alla fine di febbraio, e preferiamo chiedere ai nostri studenti di risolvere i vari problemi, quindi non possiamo rispondere rapidamente alle vostre esigenze! Se pensi che Titillium non sia ben progettato, puoi migliorarlo e ripubblicarlo. Ricordate che non siete autorizzati a farlo con un carattere commerciale.
